Kinect, and E3 2010

So, E3 has come and gone, and once again as gamers we are left with a choice.  We can allow ourselves to be excited by the new technology and games coming out, or we can be jaded elitists that dismiss everything as "casual."  I am opting for the earlier of the two.

I won't grade every company like just about every other website did, I'll just mention the things I find exciting.

Kinect looks like it's going to be a blast.  Different than the Wii and Sony's Move, Kinect taking the controller away for a brand new way to interact with games is definitely going to cause some big changes in the way we experience gaming.  I in no way wish for the controller to be phased out completely, but the idea of this being an extra layer of delicious in my gaming experience certainly doesn't sound too bad.  Of course the addition of space combat to Reach, the mutating enemies in Gears 3, and the incredible cutting mechanics in Metal Gear Rising have me drooling with excitement as well.

Nintendo blew me away with the 3DS.  The idea of a handheld that will allow me to experience 3D is incredible.  Telling me that they'll be remaking Ocarina of Time and adding Star Fox and MGS titles to the beefy little gem doesn't hurt either.  Day one purchase.

Sony, while not able to really get me as excited as the other two, still managed to announce some awesome games.  The return of Twisted Metal is a wonderful surprise, and the Move, although a blatant Wii rip-off, still looks impressive.  Though the first game was a bit repetitive, Infamous 2 looks like it'll be a lot of fun.

Basically, it's an incredible time to be a gamer.  When I look at the amount of technological jumps gaming has made since I was a kid, I almost can't believe it.  I never would have guessed we'd be picking our games and movies on a dashboard without using our hands.  I would have never thought that a handheld system could display graphics with added 3D.  So instead of complaining about which company is ripping the other off, and how hardcore games are being pushed aside for casual(they aren't, by the way), just enjoy the fact that we live in an age of technological heaven.  Game on friends, game on.
